Eve Series

Tawdry and expendable, mass-produced books, or fancy and expensive books that decorate a booklover's bookshelf. In the current system and economics of the Japanese publishing industry, it is certainly hard to make a reasonable book that is made with care and truly intended to be read by an audience. Besides, technical environment of Japanese typesetting also has been blockaded especially since the production process became digitalized. While these problems have been left on the shelf for a long time, only technologies have progressed. What could be the ideal form of books?

Within this situation that surrounds books, attempts to find a way to create good-quality books have been made. One of the examples is Eve Series, which is published by Gallery Eve in Setagaya, Tokyo. It is a series of books in sync with exhibitions that consist of poems and paintings individually by different artists. Since the publication of the first volume in the end of 2000, there has been a total eight volumes published. Each volume has a quiet but challenging experiment on its content, design and typography.

These days, the word `experimental' is nearly synonymous with `conventionally unconventional.' Eve Series, however, is truly experimental trial in its radial attitude shown here.
